  • Mamdani's acceptance speech targeted Donald Trump, promising to challenge his influence.
  • Mamdani plans to address landlord accountability, corruption, and expand labor protections.

New York City's newly elected mayor, Zohran Mamdani, took direct aim at President Donald Trump in his acceptance speech on Tuesday.

"Donald Trump, since I know you're watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up," Mamdani, a Democratic socialist, said.

Mamdani, who beat former Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa to win the race, then laid out some of his plans as mayor.

"We will hold bad landlords to account because the Donald Trumps of our city have grown far too comfortable taking advantage of their tenants," he said.

"We will put an end to the culture of corruption that has allowed billionaires like Trump to evade taxation and exploit tax breaks," he added.

"We will stand alongside unions and expand labor protections because we know, just as Donald Trump does, that when working people have ironclad rights, the bosses who seek to extort them become very small indeed," he said.

Trump has yet to publicly address Mamdani's comments.

Writing on Truth Social during Mamdani's speech, but without mentioning his name, the president said: "…AND SO IT BEGINS!"

"Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice. You must vote for him, and hope he does a fantastic job. He is capable of it, Mamdani is not!" Trump said on Monday.

Mamdani ran on a progressive agenda that includes freezing rents, free childcare, and taxing millionaires at a flat 2% rate. During the race, he faced intense opposition from several high-profile billionaires who spent big in an attempt to keep him from victory.

Some business leaders have started publicly congratulating Mamdani on his win, including Bill Ackman and Andrew Yang.

"Congrats on the win. Now you have a big responsibility. If I can help NYC, just let me know what I can do," Ackman wrote on X on Tuesday night.
